Request for Applications Deadline: February 29, 2024
PURPOSE
According to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, maternal mortality is on the rise in the United States. In 2021, the maternal mortality rate was 32.9 deaths per 100,000 live births, compared with 23.8 in 2020 and 20.1 in 2019.
In 2021, the maternal mortality rate for non-Hispanic Black women was 69.9 deaths per 100,000 live births, 2.6 times the rate for non-Hispanic White women (26.6). Maternal mortality rates for Black women were significantly higher than rates for White and Hispanic women. Additionally, data shows Black mothers are more likely to suffer from Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders like postpartum depression at higher rates than other races.
These disparities underscore the need for increased awareness, funding and resources to drive improvement in Black maternal health outcomes.
BACKGROUND
bi3 has been committed to improving maternal and infant health for nearly a decade. Since 2013, bi3 has awarded more than $7.5 million in community grants to support a diverse array of efforts, from advocating for policy change to increasing access to culturally competent maternal and infant health care. Through these investments and other supports, our community has made progress.
However, disparities in birth and maternal health outcomes persist. Founded and led nationally by Black Mamas Matter Alliance, Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW) is a week of awareness, activism and community building aimed at amplifying the voices of Black mamas. Held annually April 11–17, BMHW was officially recognized by the White House on April 13, 2021.
bi3 recognizes BMHW as a unique opportunity to educate the broader community on Black maternal health and celebrate Black women’s leadership in this space.
THE OPPORTUNITY
bi3 is interested in supporting ideas to build awareness, activism, and community-building that amplifies Black women’s voices, perspectives, and lived experiences on the path toward improving and advancing Black maternal health.
Examples of BMHW events include but are not limited to:
- Birth resource fairs providing resources to support healthy pregnancies
- Panels and interactive sessions centering Black women’s expertise (virtual or in-person)
- Wellness events aimed at increasing Black mamas’ health and well-being
- Black maternal health advocacy training (virtual or in-person)
- Engagement and advocacy with elected officials to educate on the state of Black maternal health
- Black maternal health documentary screenings and discussions
- Block parties/community baby showers
- Events celebrating Black mamas and creating spaces for them to rest, relax and repower
- Social media campaigns aimed at raising awareness and advocating for change
Events must occur during Black Maternal Health Week (April 11-17) and be open and free to the public (though registration can be required). bi3 will promote events via its social media and other communications channels.
